229,764 Wine Corks!

On July 20, 2008, Albanian artist Saimir Strati created a mosaic made entirely of 229,764 wine corks in partnership with Sheraton Tirana. The piece was over 1,000 square feet, and took a week to complete. The artwork was completed over the course of 27 days at the hotel.

Strati began his career doing restorations in Albania on several mosaics at the archeological sites of ByllisAmantia and Apollonia. He is a member of the British Association of Modern Mosaic.

This is not Strati’s first  unusual artwork, in 2006, Strati created a 6′ 7″ × 13′  1″ portrait of Leonardo da Vinci using nearly 880 pounds of nails. Resembling digital photography, each nail represented a pixel. It was confirmed as the world’s largest nail mosaic, by Guinness World Records in Tirana on September 4, 2006.

In Sumner Vineyards wine terms, this piece of art would equal drinking a bottle of wine every day for over 600 years!
